The audience at the Henkelmann in Iserlohn was swept away on Saturday evening by Pablo Sáez. What unfolded at the Obere Mühle left no one untouched.

Where do we come from? Where are we going? And how did we get here? Chilean drummer Pablo Sáez approaches his music not merely as a reaction to an “increasingly insane world,” as he puts it, but as a medium that reaches into the deeper, existential questions of humanity. This is music with a philosophical dimension, not necessarily grasped at first listening, yet unmistakably profound.
On Saturday, he appeared at the Henkelmann with his international project Surensemble to present their third album. Twelve years had passed since his last performance in Iserlohn, and once again he captivated the audience at the well-attended club at Obere Mühle with his dizzying fusion of jazz, folklore, and composed music. For those present, it was impossible not to listen through to the very end, a truly immersive and transporting concert.

Credit is also due to the outstanding musicians Sáez brought along, who together on bass, electric guitar, and drums, alongside flute, saxophone, and occasional clarinet unfolded an immense sonic spectrum, enriched by sophisticated arrangements and fearless improvisation. The closing performance of Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango” in particular sparkled with unexpected ideas and surprising turns.
Once again, the evening sparked a renewed hunger for live music at the Henkelmann. The next concert takes place on Saturday, October 26 at 8 p.m., featuring guitarist Simon Harscheidt and his “Sewing Machine Quartet.”

Das Publikum im Iserlohner Henkelmann wurde am Samstagabend von Pablo Sáez voll mitgenommen. Das wurde an der Oberen Mühle geboten.

Wo kommen wir her? Wo gehen wir hin? Und wie sind wir hierhergekommen? Der chilenische Schlagzeuger Pablo Sáez versteht seine Musik nicht nur als Statement zu einer „immer verrückter werdenden Welt“, wie er sagt, er berührt mit ihr auch die großen Fragen der Menschheit. Musik mit einer philosophischen Dimension – die man beim ersten Hören nicht unbedingt durchdringt. Dass es bei ihm aber sehr tief geht, wird auf jeden Fall hörbar. Am Samstag war er mit seinem internationalen Projekt „Surensemble“ zu Gast im Henkelmann, um seine dritte CD vorzustellen. Vor zwölf Jahren war er schon einmal in Iserlohn, und am Samstag hat er das Publikum im gut besuchten Club an der Oberen Mühle erneut mit seiner irren Stil-Mischung zwischen Jazz, Folklore und komponierter Musik richtiggehend begeistert. Wer da war, musste bis zum Schluss zuhören – ein wirklich ein- und mitnehmendes Konzert.
Nächstes Konzert im Club am 26. Oktober
Das lag auch an den tollen Musikern, die Pablo Sáez hier um sich versammelt hatte und die mit Bass, E-Gitarre und Schlagzeug sowie Flöte und Saxophon (bzw. auch Klarinette) einen enormen Klangreichtum in tollen Arrangements und viel Improvisationskunst entfalteten. Allein der abschließende „Liber Tango“ von Astor Piazzolla sprühte nur so vor überraschenden Ideen und unerwarteten Wendungen. Das hat einmal mehr Lust auf Live-Musik im Henkelmann gemacht. Weiter geht es hier am Samstag, 26. Oktober, um 20 Uhr mit dem Gitarristen Simon Harscheidt und seinem „Nähmaschinen-Quartett“.
