Pablo Sáez (drummer) Chilean Musicians around the World

Pablo Sáez Cerpa is a Chilean jazz musician, drummer, composer, and teacher. He has lived in Cologne, Germany since 2008 and has just released a new álbum called “Inmanencia” – a live version of his quintet’s first album “Surensemble”, which was recorded in 2015 and produced by 10-time Grammy winner Michael Bishop and mastered by the legendary German sound engineer Walter Quintus.

Born in Santiago, Chile, Sáez’s passion for music began at home with help from his father Raúl Sáez, a former member of the band Santiago del Nuevo Extremo (1980-83), a classical percussionist, and member of the Universidad de Chile’s Rhythmus band. At age five Pablo began to play with “Fundación Claudio Arrau”, a group specializing in introducing kids to the world of music. While at school he took up drum lessons with Carlos Figueroa López (his godfather), and arrangement and composition with maestro Toly Ramirez. Before heading out to Europe, Pablo played in a number of bands to complete his training as a jazz fusion and Latin jazz drummer, including Pedro Rodriguez (Capitán Corneta’s band), Emilio Miranda (La Patogallina Saunmachin), Infusión, the rock band Perro, and his own quartet with Pedro Villagra, Pato Rocco, and Claudio Gonzalez.

Since arriving in Germany, he has taken part in jazz productions for the TV and radio, with world-renowned musicians such as Tony Lakatos, Bart van Lier, Andy Hunter, Ryan Carniaux, and Florian Weber among others. He also worked as a session musician on the Cross-Over, Jazz and Latín-Jazz projects for the Altonaer Theatre Kammerspiel in Hamburg, SeeLive Tivoli, the Bochum Philharmonic Choir, the Niederrhein Festival, Ensemble Mercator for the Duisburg Philharmonic, and the New Westfalian Philharmonic. During his time in Cologne, he has worked with other Chilean musicians including Enrique Díaz and Ramón Gorigoitía; former members of Ortiga, Sergio Terán and Manuel Torres (with whom he deepened his exploration of South American folk music); and pianist Pablo Paredes, guitarist Álvaro Severino, and double bass player Pato Banda, with whom he has played in several projects.

In 2009, he began to study jazz composition with maestro Peter Herborn and jazz drumming with Thomas Alkier and Sperie Caras at the Folkwang Universität der Künste where he graduated as a composer and drummer in 2015. He is currently editing his third álbum as a solo artist, “Inmanencia”: a live recording of sessions from the Loft-Cologne studio made in October 2018, mixed by Christian Heck and mastered by Tigran Hamasyan drummer, Nate Wood. Because of the pandemic, the album’s release was postponed until May of this year. Sáez composed the album inspired by the convergence of the roots of South American music with the contemporary influences he has picked up throughout his career since arriving in Germany and after having visited over 40 countries as both leader and sideman of a range of bands and groups. The result is a modern jazz that brings all these disparate components together and stands out for the diversity of the group, a dynamic quintet comprising several nationalities, which he named Surensemble. The album includes participation from the musicians Philipp Brämswig (Jazz Guitar), Miguelángel Clerc, Alvaro Severino (Acoustic Guitar), Norman Peplow (Piano), Joan Chávez (Double Bass), Anette Maiburg (Flute), and Anna Tocchetti (Violin).

Pablo Sáez (Baterista) Músicos Chilenos por el mundo

Pablo Sáez Cerpa es un músico de jazz chileno, baterista, compositor y docente. Vive en Colonia, Alemania desde 2008 y acaba de publicar su nuevo álbum titulado “Inmanencia” versión en vivo de su primer disco de su quinteto “Surensemble” grabado en 2015 mezclado por el 10 veces ganador del Grammy como mejor ingeniero en sonido, el Sr. Michael Bishop y posteriormente masterizado por la leyenda del sonido Alemán Walter Quintus.

Nacido en Santiago de Chile, comienza su afición por la música en la casa de su padre Raúl Sáez, ex integrante del grupo Santiago del Nuevo Extremo (1980 – 1983), percusionista clásico, integrante del grupo Rytmus de la Universidad de Chile. A los cinco años comenza a tocar con el grupo de iniciación a la música de “Fundación Claudio Arrau”. Ya en el colegio estudia Batería popular con Carlos Figueroa López (su padrino), contrapunto y composición melódica con el maestro Toly Ramirez.

Antes de partir a Europa, Pablo tocó en varios músicos en los que se formó como baterista de jazz fusión y latín jazz como Pedro Rodriguez (La banda del capitán corneta), Emilio Miranda (La Patogallina Saunmachin), Infusión, el grupo de rock Perro y su cuarteto con Pedro Villagra, Pato Rocco y Claudio Gonzalez.

Desde su llegada a Alemania, ha participado en producciones de jazz para radio y TV con músicos de categoría mundial como Tony Lakatos, Bart van Lier, Andy Hunter, Ryan Carniaux y Florian Weber entre otros. Además de ser músico de sesión en proyectos de Cross-Over, Jazz y Latín-Jazz para el Altonaer Theatre Kammerspiel de Hamburgo, SeeLive Tivoli, el Coro Filarmónico de Bochum, el Festival de Niederrhein, el Ensemble Mercator de la Filarmónica de Duisburg y la Nueva Filarmónica de Westfalia. En Colonia tubo contacto con otros músicos chilenos, como Enrique Díaz y Ramón Gorigoitía, además de los ex Ortiga Sergio Terán y Manuel Torres, con quienes profundizó en el folclor sudamericano, aparte de tocar en distintos proyectos con el pianista Pablo Paredes, el guitarrista Álvaro Severino y el contrabajista Pato Banda.

El año 2009 entra a estudiar composición Jazz con el maestro Peter Herborn y batería-jazz con Thomas Alkier y Sperie Caras en la Folkwang Universität der Künste titulandose como compositor y baterista el 2015. Hoy edita su tercer álbum como solista, el disco “Inmanencia”, que fue grabado en vivo en el estudio Loft-Cologne en ocubre de 2018, mezclado por Christian Heck y masterizado por el baterista de Tigran Hamasyan, Nate Wood. Debido a la pandemia el lanzamiento se tuvo que posponer hasta mayo de este año. Pablo Sáez compuso este álbum basándose en el encuentro de las raíces de la música sudamericana y las influencias de las músicas actuales que él fue encontrando en su carrera desde su llegada a Alemania y luego de visitar casi 40 paises los últimos años como líder y sideman en distintas agrupaciónes. El resultado ha sido un jazz contemporáneo que reúne estos componentes y que se remarca en el mestizaje de su agrupación, dinámico quinteto de varias nacionalidades, que él bautizó como Surensemble. En el disco participan los músicos Philipp Brämswig (Guitarra Jazz Guitar), Miguelángel Clerc, Alvaro Severino (Guitarra Acústica), Norman Peplow (Piano), Joan Chávez (Contrabajo), Anette Maiburg (Flauta) y Anna Tocchetti (Violin).
